Brendan the Navigator

St Brendan was born in Annagh, Co. Kerry in 484 AD. He went on to found numerous monasteries across Ireland, most notably Clonfert, Co. Galway, in 560 AD, where he is also buried.

A renowned seafarer, Brendan travelled widely to Britain and possibly as far as Brittany. His most famous journey is recorded in the 9th-century manuscript The Voyage of St Brendan the Abbot, which recounts his seven-year expedition with fourteen monks in search of the Island of the Blessed.

According to legend, the voyage brought them to distant lands, possibly including Iceland, Greenland and even North America. Along the way, they encountered icebergs, volcanic islands and mythical sea creatures.

St Brendan’s feast day is celebrated on 16 May. He is regarded as the patron saint of seafarers and travellers.

Artist: Rachel Arbuckle

Rachel Arbuckle graduated from Dublin’s National College of Art and Design in 1990. Since then, her distinctive Celtic-inspired work has gained an international following and is available worldwide in a variety of formats.

Her use of colour, while contemporary, echoes the soft, natural pigments used by the Celts centuries ago. In her depiction of St Brendan, Arbuckle combines intricate detail with a modern interpretation of this iconic Irish figure.
