Irish Four Pence (4p) Stamp – Celtic Hound (An Cú Ceilteach) by Heinrich Gerl - Print

Tiny Giants is a series that celebrates the intricate details of the smallest objects, magnifying their tiniest features so you can truly appreciate every scratch and dent. Each imperfection tells a story, from hands exchanging them in bustling markets to decades spent tucked away in pockets. These flaws, brought into sharp focus, transform the objects into intimate portraits of history, inviting you to see the beauty in their wear and tear.

This Irish four pence (4p) postage stamp features a beautifully stylised Celtic Hound (An Cú Ceilteach), designed by German artist Heinrich Gerl as part of Ireland's Early Irish Art definitive stamp series, introduced in 1968.

Printed in a rich crimson red, the stamp depicts a distinctive white hound decorated with intricate spirals, geometric patterns and Celtic-inspired ornamentation. Its elongated body, curved tail and highly stylised features draw inspiration from the decorative animal imagery found in early Irish art and metalwork.

Hounds have long held an important place in Irish mythology and folklore, often associated with loyalty, courage and protection. Gerl's interpretation combines these ancient artistic traditions with the clean lines and bold simplicity of modern graphic design.

A beautiful example of Irish postal design, this historic stamp celebrates Ireland's mythology, ancient craftsmanship and rich artistic heritage.
